Hi all, I'm new to the wonderful world of Pico-8. I picked up programming a while ago as a hobby and have had this idea for a gorpy game enemy that reassembles its self as you fight it. I was hoping to see it in Doom or Doomlikes but never have so I gave it a go on a scale that was manageable to me. It used to have little critters that would fly off the slaughter (there was a sword first) to feed from the gorp and lay eggs but I could not fit that into the cart with a life and score system which forced me to focus on gameplay. I LOVE these limitations and the past two weeks got me further than I thought I would.

I appreciate it when games let you figure them out so I tend not to give any instructions apart from controls. Feel free to share what you think about this, feedback and ideas are more than welcome.

What's this?

Gorpslosh is a top-down hack 'n' slash with ignitable goop and matches.

How does it work?

• [arrows] to move in absolute direction
• [x] to interact, hold and release to throw match, spam to ward off gorp
• [z] to spill ignitable goop if found

Features

Doors

Cans of ignitable goop

Match throwing

Creepy eggs

Proliferating onslaught

Development

I would like to post some of this game's history at a later time

• add reticle -- thanks @ Steven()#6 !
• add match speed * player speed -- thanks @ Verb !
• increase directional intention -- thanks @ T_O_E !

Credits

This game was made by me, skipperd

Tips

  • Strike matches about a second before throwing
  • Release struck matches with directional intention
  • Use doors and walls to your advantage
  • Use gorp downtime to plan goop spillage ahead of growth
  • Get sweet highscores

This is a really fun demo. My only complaint is that there is no fighting back against the Gorp. Maybe if the game was more clear about where you're throwing your match? But I must tip my hat. I've never seen a more robust mechanic executed as concisely. You are an expert programmer, my friend. I would love to see this in a full game! Like, with a full map and everything!

@ Steven()#6 you can fight back, but it's hard to pull off and limited (afaik). Would be nice if matches were thrown straight up when you're standing still for an easier aiming option.

That's a beefy highscore! Nicely done! I've added a crosshair and matches can now be thrown upwards. Thank you for the awesome feedback! I'm gonna have to get into multi-carts for that generated mega dungeon storyline. Who knows what's lurking in the sky..

I agree, this game is well made, albeit the controls are confusing at first. Maybe if you lit the match immediately, the game experience could be more balanced, but still pretty intense.

I appreciate that! I'm thinking about about a way to balance this a little more, I took 20% off of the match striking time for now. Thanks for the feedback.
